Thomas H Carruthers Teambuilding Bio

Tom Carruthers is the perfect match for the abilities of Steve Phillips. While Steve’s professional background is in teambuilding/leadership development, and he enjoys the sport of sailing as a hobby. Tom brings to the organization a history of competitive racing at the top levels, and a past in the professional services industry.

Tom began racing sailboats in his childhood on Lake Michigan. Over the years he has competed as a crew member in some of the highest levels of the sport; Congressional Cup, One Ton North American Championships, Bermuda Gold Cup and America’s Cup defense trials. In the late eighties he began to put together teams of his own, and had successfully competed in several National level events (MORC Internationals, Key West Race Week, North Sails Race Week, etc.).

After receiving his MBA, Tom spent six years working with a large public accounting firm. Then he went to work for a division of a Fortune Five Hundred entity as Manager of Financial Operations, and ten years as CFO for a large Midwestern law firm. In 1996 he took over the operations of J World in San Diego, and has nurtured its growth since.
